What's In Your Lipstick? | Try Carmine-Free Lipstick

What's In Your Lipstick?

Eco-friendly, carmine free cosmetics by Barbie's Beauty Bits

PINK and RED makeup often contains the color additive cochineal extracts, which are derived from crushed cochineal insects (beetles).  Now before you get bugged out, these additives are safe. However, they can be a common allergen.  So, if you’ve ever found yourself sensitive to a red lipstick or blush, it could be because of this. The FDA does require manufacturers to list these colors on the labels, but you need to know what to look for.  For example, you may see an ingredient listed as carmine or natural red 4, (AKA bugs).

Although I am not a vegan, and honestly, we could be putting worse things on our lips then bugs.  The allergy part intrigued me, as I have been allergic to some makeup colors, and after looking for the ones that bothered me, they all had carmine listed as an ingredient.  So, this made me wonder are there any Eco-friendly, carmine free cosmetics I should consider to see if there was a difference?  The search was not that easy, but I was able to find Carmine Free sites/products.

Please see below some of the best carmine free lipsticks.

  2. Oh my thanks so much! I really don't care if bugs are on my lips, heck they are probably safer then other man made items. But I'm allergic to alot of reds, and I wonder if I'm allergic to the carmine?

I'm going to try one of those sites you suggested and see if there is a difference. I'm so excited... Can't thank you enough for your continued bits!

    1. Most certainly and thanks for commenting. I too was allergic to red dyes and this is what prompted the post. There are some great alternative options, so let me know if you find any you like. I hope you find out or at least find another alternative.

  3. Poor beetles because they are going to be crushed. I thought some makeup revealed that there is no animal testing on their products. Maybe I should check the ingredients of the lipsticks that I am going to use. I only know that human heart nature has eco-friendly products. I will check the sites that you have suggested because it is alarming to know that insects are being used on a product.

  4. Really interesting facts. It's scary to think what they put in cosmetics and things these days, its impossible to avoid these.I'm vegetarian and try go for products that are not animal tested as much as I can, but unfortunately its so easy to pick things up without realising.

  5. I have allergies to certain reds, and I bet this is it. Although I am not a vegetarian, bugs are things I prefer to find on the ground not on my lips! Thanks for sharing!
