Salon Looking Nails At Home

Salon looking nails at home, with Pam cooking spray, vinegar, ice and petroleum jelly, by Barbie's Beauty BIts

Nails and all the cool colors are the rage right now, and with all of these great options, we want a polish to pretty look we can achieve at home instead of a nail salon!  Therefore, I’ve compiled some great tips on how to have a professional manicure look at home.

BB Bit 1: Clean Nails... It seems simple, but you want to make sure that all the old nail polish is completely removed. One way to ensure this is a quick wipe over with some vinegar, as it will remove any leftover nail polish remover, moisturizer, or any other residue; ultimately enabling the polish to adhere longer.

BB Bit 2: No More Messy Manicures… An excellent way to keep nail polish from running over onto your cuticles or places you don't want it.  Apply a small bit of petroleum jelly along the sides and the base of your nails. If polish seeps off the nail, who cares, as all you have to do is wipe off the petroleum jelly, and you now have perfectly painted nails!

BB Bit 3: Applying Polish... I've found that applying multiple thin coats of nail polish works much better than one thick coat.

BB Bit 4: Base Coat…This will help to prevent staining and chipping, and make sure after you have polished your nails with your favorite color, that you finish with a top coat.

BB Bit 5: Drying… After spending all that time polishing, you want to make sure your nails are completely dried before you hit the town.  So, I have 3 tips on how to have them looking polish perfect.

Ice, Ice Baby... To Dry Your Nails
  • Ice Water… I’ve heard some debates on this, but I’ve been doing this for years, and it works well. The trick, however, is that you just have to make sure you take the correct steps to complete this process.  So, before you even start painting your nails, you want to get a bowl of ice and fill it with some water & place it in the frig.  Once your nails are completed, let them air dry for a few minutes and finish them off by sticking your fingertips in the ice water for 3 minutes, this will help to dry them much quicker.  Important, you want to make sure that you are not moving your fingers around, as you don’t want to hit any ice.  Once completed, remove and let them air dry for a minute before you pat dry.
  • Your Hair Dryer…However, you need to have one that has a cool air option; hot air will not work. Furthermore, you need to do it on low; otherwise, you will mess up your nails.
  • Pam, and no that is not my sister.  However, my sister who did nails professionally for years told me about this one!  To set your nails and to help prevent smudges, you can spray your nails with Pam, oil spray.  Pam seems to work best as I’ve tried some other brands, and they didn’t do the job.
